Tauck and Filmmaker Ken Burns Renew and Expand Partnership

New Five-Year Agreement Includes Longtime Burns Collaborators

WILTON, CT (March 28, 2017)  Tauck and Ken Burns have renewed their highly successful Ken Burns American Journeys partnership, signing a new five-year agreement that expands the relationship to include several of the award-winning filmmaker’s longtime collaborators and add additional content.  Through the partnership, Tauck enhances its guests’ on-tour experience by including exclusive content in many of the company’s domestic itineraries.

Besides continuing its work with Burns himself,  Tauck will also continue to work with the filmmaker’s close friend and longtime collaborator Dayton Duncan.  Burns and Duncan have worked together on numerous projects, beginning with the 1996 film “The West” and “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea,” “The Dust Bowl,” and “Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery,” among others.

New to the Tauck partnership are director and producer Lynn Novick and producer Sarah Botstein.  Novick has worked with Burns on a number of films, beginning with 1990’s “The Civil War” and more recently “Prohibition,” “The Tenth Inning,” “The War,” “Jazz” and “Baseball.”  Botstein has produced films with Burns since 1997, including “Prohibition,” “The War” and “Jazz.”  Both Novick and Botstein are currently working with Burns on “The Vietnam War,” a highly anticipated, ten-part, 18-hour documentary series scheduled to air on PBS this September.  Tauck has two itineraries that visit Vietnam, and they are slated to be the company’s first non-domestic tours enhanced through the partnership.

The Ken Burns American Journeys partnership is made up of three components.  The first is an ever-expanding series of more than 150 filmed “Stories by Ken Burns” vignettes that Tauck guests view on tour.  These brief documentaries (10 – 15 minutes long) typically feature clips from relevant Burns films along with interview segments in which the filmmaker offers his insights on places Tauck guests are about to experience.  For example, while en route to Gettysburg, Tauck guests view a vignette on Joshua Chamberlain, a Maine theology-professor-turned-soldier who emerged as an unlikely hero of the critical three-day battle. 

Burns is also instrumental in designing “Crafted by Tauck & Ken Burns” journeys, original itineraries co-created by the filmmaker and the tour operator.  “Crafted by” itineraries include an eight-day “John Muir’s California” trip visiting Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, a nine-day “Bluegrass and Blue Ridges” exploration of Kentucky, North Carolina and Tennessee, and “Hidden Gems of New England,” which includes a visit to Burns’s Walpole, New Hampshire, studio and highlights themes from his films ranging from “Baseball” to “Mark Twain” to “The Civil War.”

“Ken Burns Events, the third component of the partnership, are special single-departure travel experiences providing an in-depth exploration of a particular destination.  Typically five days in length, Events are notable for having Burns himself in attendance, delivering each gathering’s keynote address and meeting and mingling with Tauck guests afterward.  Events scheduled for 2017 include an immersion into the world of jazz in New Orleans, and an exploration of New York City’s rich history and culture.  Past Events have highlighted baseball in Cooperstown, New York, the American Civil War in and around Washington, DC, and Prohibition, organized crime, jazz, and Frank Lloyd Wright in Chicago.
